What is a Ghost Box?

The premise. A modified radio that allows two way communication with a spirit. Some say you have to be a medium for it to work for you. Others say anyone can use it. Some say, the whole thing is just rubbish.

To fully understand this, we need to discuss ITC. ITC is short for Instrumental Transcommunication. Being able to communicate with the "other side" using instruments. EVP & ITC work go hand in hand. Most people who research EVP, also dabble in ITC. There are many different ways of ITC but, for now we are going to stick to the topic.

The breakdown of the Ghost Box we will discuss will be the 12-587 "Shack Hack". "Shack Hack" is a term coined by paranormal enthusiasts that means they have modified a device purchased from Radio Shack, to be used as a tool.

This particular model is a digital AM/FM radio with built in speakers. Now the built in speakers are a key feature since older versions were cheaper, and you had to purchase external speakers to be able to hear anything. There is nothing super special about this radio. One modification needs to be made in order to convert it to a "Ghost Box". The modification allows this model to go into a "linear sweep". A linear sweep allows for continuous scan of the tuner frequencies.

In modern radios, a feature was implemented to keep us from hearing all the static and unwanted noise between the radio stations as it scanned. It also allowed for the radio to determine the strong point of frequency to know which channel to stop on for the clearest audio. This feature is called a "Mute Pin". The mute pin, does exactly the job it sounds like it would do and MUTES the unwanted noise. The Shack Hack Modification, is the removal of this pin. With the pin removed, the frequency level stays the same, so the channels will scan infinitely without stopping, thus giving us the LINEAR SWEEP.

Now, with that out of the way. These "in between" frequencies are where the spirit voices are supposedly picked up. As this radio scans from channel to channel at high speeds, you will hear bits and pieces, sounds of radio stations, music, etc. Once in awhile, you will hear voices that seem to stand out, cover a span of channels, make full sentences, or even reply to a question you may have asked. Is this anything more than audio matrixing? Maybe, but most likely not.

I will admit, I have had very strange things come through, and very coincidental, sometimes TOO coincidental things come across the box. Would I ever present it as evidence? No. Why? Because it's unproven. There are too many factors that can cause false positives and most of the time you are priming your auditory senses by asking questions that you already know the answer to. When you do this, your brain will listen to any sound and/or noise that even REMOTELY sounds like the answer you are already prepared to hear. While this is not ALWAYS the case, the data would indicate that it happens more times than not, and is way above chance to be considered an anomaly. Meaning 90% of the time, you will not get any type of result (misses), more than you will get coincidentals (hits).

I always suggest people try things out for themselves and come up with their own opinions based on their OWN research. In some of the tests we have run, we used people as variables. People who had a heavy belief system in the paranormal seemed to almost always get the answers they were looking for, and people who had no interest (not only in the paranormal, but were also not BIASED AGAINST), they hardly ever got a "hit".

It's a great item to experiment with, just know what you are getting. It's not a telephone. You are not going to be talking to many of your dead relatives, and you most likely won't be impressed the first 20 times. Keep at it, decide on your own, and make sure you keep track of everything. We'll still play with it, but our analysis would point to it not being a very reliable piece of equipment to US, but most believers are ALL ABOUT IT.
